Out of the Gate, a Measure of Character
First, thank you to all who’ve already donated and spread the word of Strength in STEM, a not-for-profit venture by and for Afghan girls. We’re at $820 or just over 5% of the goal. For those looking for a special gift, please consider donating on behalf of someone you love and tell them about the difference their gift will make.
These blogs will be as much an update on Strength in STEM as an introduction to Nora and Fatima, the venture’s determined leaders. They’re brilliant and feisty. Since connecting with Nora in late October 2022, I’ve learned about her childhood, her competitive streak, her passion for math and science, her maturity, and the courage with which she and her family has faced threat, escape, exile, humiliation, and obstacle after obstacle. I’ve also come to know Fatima, her passion for writing, her passionate pushback for unworthy tradition, her curiosity for global cultures, and her extroverted ability to make friends anywhere.
This GoFundMe campaign launched on December 11th. A review of the project was already conducted pre-launch, for fair reasons. Mentioning Afghanistan and Iran in a fundraising campaign, two countries who face U.S. sanctions, was the trigger. We earned approval, had done our homework, and knew the importance of an active launch. On the 12th, GoFundMe paused the account yet again, simply due to crossed wires at their end. Many saw us online, clicked the link, only to find an error message. While we waited for answers, those of us on the girls’ Advisory Team fumed. Not Nora. Here’s her message to me on December 14th:
Hello and good morning, dear Madar.
I've spent the past two nights unable to sleep due to worry and discomfort. But please, know that this discomfort isn't about our GFM being blocked or any work-related issue. It's frustrating how this situation impacted you. Unfortunately, it was beyond our control—GFM didn't fulfill its duties properly, leading to this problem. However, please don't worry. Instances like this happen in all kinds of jobs. Whether it gets resolved or not, your peace means more to me than anything. This was a learning experience for us, and I hope they'll resolve the restriction soon. If not, there's no need for concern. Just be happy. You mean more to me than the entire world, and you're always on my thoughts.
Through this site, you will be getting to know two young women of remarkable character. They will help reach and inspire countless others through Strength in STEM. Please join the cause. Donate what you can. Spread the word. Help them turn the tide.
