A start-up always comes with risk. Does it address a worthy problem? Can resources be secured, customer channels established, costs managed? Is there a path to sustainable success?
For Strength in STEM (SiSTEM), the answers are yes. The SiSTEM pilot has launched. Nora and Fatima are providing 12 hours each week of ESL instruction to young Afghan females in Afghanistan and Iran, allowing these two young leaders to build systems, create curriculum, and develop new skills. They have access to a network of global professionals and STEM leaders. Costs are clear and manageable.
And yet, Nora and Fatima face the most monumental of risks. They and their family are living as refugees in Pakistan. They were forced to flee Afghanistan because their family’s dedication to human rights made them a target. They faced starvation until Nora initiated what became the family’s Canadian support system. Like many others, they are unjustly unwelcome in Pakistan. The visas which allowed them to be there are not being renewed. Deportations, which were paused due to international outcry over winter conditions, are expected to begin again as of March 1st. While their commitment to SiSTEM is undaunted, they may soon need to continue their venture from within Afghanistan.
To all who have already donated and spread the word, thank you for the direct difference you’ve made, not only to Nora and Fatima but also the Afghan girls who now have hope, community, and learning thanks to their leadership. Please keep spreading the word.
To all who haven’t yet helped, please do so now. All donations are being sent to Nora and Fatima. Should the girls end up back in Afghanistan, the GoFundMe campaign must end and SiSTEM will need to grow without it. The time to support SiSTEM is now.
Nora and Fatima are singularly able to reach and inspire Afghan girls. They are wise, determined, and courageous beyond their years. All they need is us behind them. Please donate. The time is now.
