SiSTEM Now Including Instruction in Women's Health and Cybersecurity
Nora and Fatima have begun building their network of STEM instructors, now helping not only Afghan girls but also housewives seeking accurate health guidance. Instruction in cybersecurity is also starting soon.
Here's Nora's most recent update:
From our school, Strength in STEM (SiSTEM), I'm pleased to report that classes are going smoothly. This past week, we commemorated International Mother Language Education Day, prompting discussions among students about the crucial role of mother tongues in education and shedding light on the challenges faced in Afghanistan.
During these discussions, students expressed concern over the situation in Afghanistan, particularly under Taliban control. They lamented the cessation of teaching in local languages, notably Uzbek, one of Afghanistan's indigenous languages. Furthermore, they highlighted the restrictions placed on Persian language usage in many areas and the efforts to impose Pashto language on other ethnic groups within Afghanistan.
It was a productive day filled with engaging discussions. Additionally, I approached one of my students, who is a doctor, and proposed collaboration. I suggested that she conduct a weekly class, specifically focusing on health and women's health issues, for all our female students. Thankfully, she agreed, and starting from next Monday, she will commence teaching for one hour per week. This class will cater to both Strength in STEM students and interested housewives. Moreover, specialized guidance on women's health matters will be provided during these sessions.
Presently, I am in discussions with an IT expert. We're planning to conduct an awareness session focusing on mobile and computer security, social networks, and cyber security, Given the current circumstances, ensuring the safety of female students in Afghanistan is paramount. Additionally, I intend to organize computer training sessions in the future for all students by him.
While I recognize that my efforts may seem modest, I am committed to effecting change. Even if I can positively impact just one person's life, I will persist in my endeavors. These small initiatives may well lay the groundwork for more substantial transformations in society down the line. In the meantime, I will continue to develop and implement various programs in SiSTEM.
As refugees living precariously in Pakistan, Nora and Fatima need the generosity of others to support the growth of Strength in STEM. We hope you will join us by donating to the SiSTEM GoFundMe campaign and by spreading the word.
